This is the question I am asked most often, and the honest answer is that it depends on you. Laser and electrolysis are different treatments. They work in different ways, suit different areas, and are not always interchangeable. The best choice depends on your hair, your skin, the area you want treated, and what you are hoping to achieve.
Rather than telling anyone there is one right answer, I think it is more useful to lay out where each treatment tends to do its best work. These guides are general, and a proper consultation is always the safest way to decide.
Laser is often best for:
| Laser may be suitable for | Why |
|---|---|
| Large body areas | It can treat many hairs at once, making it faster than electrolysis. |
| Dark, coarse hair | Laser works best when there is enough pigment in the hair to target. |
| Underarms, legs and some bikini areas | These areas often respond well if the hair is dark and the client is a suitable candidate. |
| Clients wanting reduction over a larger area | Laser can reduce the amount and thickness of hair over time. |
Electrolysis is often best for:
| Electrolysis may be suitable for | Why |
|---|---|
| Face, chin, jawline and neck | These areas are often hormonally influenced and need a more precise approach. |
| Upper lip and sideburns | Electrolysis can treat individual hairs without relying on pigment. |
| Stomach and upper arms | These areas can contain finer hairs that may not be ideal for laser. |
| Blonde, red, grey or white hair | Electrolysis does not rely on hair colour. |
| Melanin-rich skin | Electrolysis can treat all skin tones because it targets the follicle, not the skin pigment. |
| Finishing after laser | Electrolysis can remove the hairs that laser leaves behind. |
It is also worth saying that these treatments are not enemies. Many of our clients have done both. Laser may take care of the bulk of the work on larger areas, and electrolysis is what finishes the job, particularly on the face, on stubborn hairs, or on follicles that laser cannot reach.
If you are unsure which path is right for you, I would always recommend a consultation. A few minutes of conversation can save months of treating the wrong area with the wrong tool.
